# Chart templates

[Canonical page](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/charts/templates/)

## Applicability

- **Task:** Save and reuse a supported chart definition
- **Access:** Portrait account; source connections and entitlements can apply
- **Audience:** Portrait users building or reusing charts
- **Surfaces:** web
- **Availability:** Beta
- **Content type:** reference
- **Last reviewed:** 2026-09-07

Charts and chart templates are in beta. They are available in the web app; individual series still depend on source connection, coverage, and entitlement. A template stores a reusable chart definition. Company-bound series become parameters; macro series and fixed market indexes can remain part of the template.

Company Data cannot currently be used in chart templates. Build and save a company-specific chart instead when that category is required.

## Create and edit a template

* **Create** a template from the editor in new-template mode. Define the layout the same way you build a chart, then save it.
* **Edit** a template you own to update its name and chart definition. System templates are available to use but cannot be edited in place. To customize their result, save a chart from the template, edit that chart, and use **Save as template** for your own reusable definition.
* **Duplicate** or **delete** your own templates from the library pane. Portrait asks for confirmation before deletion; deleting a template is permanent and cannot be undone.

## Use a template

Open a template from the library pane and supply any company parameters it requires. Review missing or substituted series before saving the resulting chart into a Project.

The saved charts are independent copies of the template's definition. Editing or deleting the template later does not update or remove those Project charts. A template also does not grant access to the data it references; check the destination companies' coverage, source entitlement, and any [Visible Alpha display limit](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/charts/calculations-and-data/).

## Verify and recover

Reopen each resulting chart in its destination Project and confirm the companies, series, transforms, axes, and period. If using a template reports an error, check the destination before repeating the action: some charts may already have been created. See [Build a chart](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/charts/building-a-chart/) to edit a saved result, copy it to another Project, or troubleshoot an inaccessible Project.
