# Save and export Easel work

[Canonical page](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/easel/export-and-save/)

## Applicability

- **Task:** Save, copy, or export work from an Easel conversation
- **Access:** Portrait account; usage and data entitlements vary
- **Audience:** Portrait users working with Easel
- **Surfaces:** web
- **Availability:** Production with account and surface-specific limits
- **Content type:** how-to
- **Last reviewed:** 2026-09-24

Use the controls on a supported assistant message when you need a copy outside the Easel conversation:

* **Copy** — copy the response to your clipboard to paste elsewhere.
* **Export to PDF** — save the supported response text as a formatted PDF. Inline images and charts are not included in the PDF; save them separately from the conversation.

Charts that Easel produces can appear inline in the conversation as images. Save the image and any available source data separately before exporting the text response.

To export the conversation rather than one response, open **Conversation options** and choose **Export conversation as PDF**. This includes user messages and final assistant responses, without tool calls or thinking. Open a saved conversation first; the action is unavailable while another export is in progress. The same text-only PDF limitation applies, so preserve charts and other generated files separately.

For supported deliverables you want to keep inside Portrait, ask Easel to save them to **My Library** — see [Use My Library in Easel](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/easel/your-library/).

For a Word deliverable, explicitly request a `.docx`, name its intended contents and destination folder, and ask Easel to save and link the file. Open that saved item and download its original file before sharing it. A message that mentions a filename is not proof that a file was saved, and an email answer does not guarantee that the Word file arrives as an attachment.

For the file types Easel can create and their limits, see [Research outputs and file formats](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/reference/output-formats/#easel-created-files).

## Verify the result

1. Open the copied text or downloaded PDF outside Portrait.
2. Confirm that the title, scope, supported citations, tables, and links you need are present; verify separately saved chart images and data from the conversation.
3. Recheck material figures and quotations against their sources before sharing the file.

## If export fails

- Retry from the original assistant message rather than from copied text.
- If an expected citation or chart is absent, keep the Portrait conversation link with the exported file and verify the source separately.
- If the export control is unavailable, copy the supported text or [contact the team](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/more/contact-us/) with the conversation URL and the action attempted. Do not send credentials or private source content.

## Picking up where you left off

Open **Ask Easel** and select your saved work under **Recent conversations**. See [Continue a conversation](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/easel/start-a-session/#continue-a-conversation) to ask further questions about it.

## Email the result

Ask Easel to email the completed result to your own account address. It cannot choose an arbitrary colleague as recipient. Check the email receipt and each attachment outcome separately; this path has different limits from replies to incoming email research questions. See [Email a result from Easel](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/easel/email-delivery/).
