# Research outputs and file formats

[Canonical page](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/reference/output-formats/)

## Applicability

- **Task:** Choose a supported output or export format
- **Access:** Portrait account and applicable data entitlements; full Easel access required for Slack, Teams, email using a linked Portrait account, and CLI; CLI additionally requires an account-enabled Easel CLI bridge
- **Audience:** Portrait users planning how to review, save, or deliver research
- **Surfaces:** web; ios; slack; teams; email; cli
- **Availability:** Production with workflow-specific limits
- **Content type:** reference
- **Last reviewed:** 2026-10-08

Output format depends on the workflow. A supported input format is not necessarily a supported generated output. Easel through Slack, Teams, email using a linked Portrait account, or CLI requires full Easel access; CLI additionally requires the account-enabled Easel CLI bridge.

| Workflow | Primary output | Save or export options | Surface and material limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easel | Markdown response and requested files | Copy a response; export a response or the conversation as PDF; save inline images or charts separately | Web controls distinguish a response from the whole conversation. Server-generated PDF exports are text-only; bridges have their own file delivery controls |
| Deep Research | Portrait Review and Appendix | Copy report content; export the Review or full report as PDF | Web and supported mobile report pages; source display and citation availability depend on licences and entitlements |
| Charts | Line or bar chart from supported series | **Copy chart** produces a PNG with the chart's legend and available citations | Web; no bulk Project-chart PDF export. Copying a rendered chart does not create a data workbook |
| Company Primer | Abridged or Full generated company research | Copy the selected version; **Save Primer as PDF** | Desktop; the selected version must be available |
| Company Case Study | Generated quarterly sections with separate price context | Copy or download a PDF of the selected section for the displayed quarter or a selected range | Desktop; verify both section and quarter scope. The visible price-history range does not by itself change the selected report quarter |
| Monitors | Updates and summaries | Export one update or summary as PDF, or export updates since a selected date | Web detail pages; bulk export excludes summaries and has a 2,000-update limit. See [Monitor export limits](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/monitors/export-monitor-updates/) for date boundaries and older content |
| Screening | Company results and per-filter reasoning | Web: **Export to Excel** downloads selected companies, or the current result set when none are selected. iOS: **Export** downloads the current result set | Web and iOS; CSV includes company, ticker, and available filter reasoning, and opens in Excel. Selecting a subset is a web control |
| Mosaic, when enabled | Company dossiers and pass results; ranking in screening mode | Ranking results can be exported as `.xlsx` with rank, company, ticker, Elo, and summary | Account-gated web workflow; task-mode frameworks have no ranking export. This does not establish availability for another account |

## Easel-created files

When the task warrants a file, Easel can create:

- Word documents (`.docx`);
- Excel workbooks (`.xlsx`), excluding Visible Alpha data;
- charts as PNG; save and verify any supporting JSON supplied with the image. If the data file you need is missing, ask Easel to include it;
- PDF files.

Portrait does not currently generate PowerPoint (`.pptx`) files.

Copy and export controls are surface-specific. A file type that Easel can create during a supported session is not evidence that every Easel bridge exposes the same download control.

In a supported My Library workbook, **Download** exports the displayed dropdown and column-width adjustments even before automatic version saving finishes. It does not itself save a version to Portrait. See [Excel adjustments and saving](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/documents/my-library/#adjust-an-excel-workbook) for calculation, history, and recovery limits.

## Sharing inside Portrait

To give teammates read-only access to a Deep Research report or screen, use [Sharing](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/documents/sharing/). Export controls create files; they do not grant access inside Portrait.

## Verify an exported result

1. Compare the exported title and scope with the source session or report.
2. Confirm that the expected tables, supported citations, links, and page breaks survived. Easel PDF export does not include inline chart images; preserve and verify those separately from the session. For CSV or Excel, confirm the file extension and exported row selection.
3. Recheck material figures and quotations against the source.
4. Keep the Portrait link or report identifier with the delivered file when future traceability matters.

See [Save and export Easel work](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/easel/export-and-save/), [Export a Deep Research report](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/research/export-output/), [Export Monitor updates](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/monitors/export-monitor-updates/), and [My Library input formats](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/documents/my-library/). The input-format list does not define what Easel can generate.

## Email delivery is a separate outcome

[Emailing a result from an app conversation](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/easel/email-delivery/) sends only to the authenticated user's address, with up to five files and 7 MB in total. [Easel's replies to your email](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/integrations/portrait-email/) have different attachment and recipient limits. [Scheduled Research](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/scheduled-research/notifications-and-troubleshooting/) separates run success, notification policy, email preference, and attachment delivery. Ask which path is being used before quoting a limit.

For an [email-only trial](https://portraitresearch.com/documentation/integrations/email-trial/), provide the result in the message or a delivered attachment; an internal My Library link is not accessible. A generated or saved file is not proof that it arrived with the email.
