Portrait by Email
Copy for agent
You can put Easel, Portrait's AI equity analyst, in your inbox. Email a research question to easel@portraitresearch.com and the answer comes back as a reply on the same thread, with citations from SEC filings, earnings call transcripts, news, and consensus estimates.
Nothing to install. Each email thread is a persistent research session, and you connect your Portrait account once — so every question runs, and counts toward your research usage, as your own account.
Connect your Portrait account
- Email your question from the address on your Portrait account. That address is how Portrait recognizes you.
- Portrait replies with a link to connect your account.
- Sign in with your normal Portrait credentials. You must sign in as the account that owns the address you sent from — signing in as anyone else will not complete the link.
- Your original question then runs automatically and the answer arrives as a reply on that same thread. You never have to resend it.
The link is one-time. If it later expires or is revoked, the next email prompts you to reconnect.
ℹ️ Using Portrait by email requires Easel access on your Portrait account. If Portrait replies that your account is not enabled for the email assistant yet, contact the team.
Ask a question
Send a plain email — the subject line is yours to use however you like, and the question goes in the body.
Reply on the thread to keep going. The thread is one continuous session, so follow-ups keep their context. Quoted history from your reply is stripped, so Portrait works from your new words rather than re-reading the conversation. A new email starts a fresh session.
Forward relevant context. When you forward something, the forwarded material is passed to Portrait along with whatever you wrote above it.
Answers are formatted replies: headings, lists, and tables render as you would expect in your mail client, and links open the underlying document in the Portrait app.
Send attachments
Attach files to your email and Portrait reads them as part of the question. Attachments are saved to an Email attachments folder in My Library, so they stay available for later work in the app.
Up to 10 attachments per email, each up to 20 MB. Anything beyond that is skipped, and the reply tells you what was left out.
Images are the exception. An image pasted into the body of your email is ignored, and an attached image file is saved to My Library but Portrait usually cannot read what is in it. Send the numbers or text you want analyzed in the email itself, or attach a PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, HTML, or plain-text file.
Good to know
- Portrait answers whoever started the thread. If you are copied on someone else's thread and reply to it, Portrait asks you to send your own email instead of running the question — so nobody's research usage is charged to the wrong account.
- Send from your own mail account. Messages that fail your domain's sender authentication are dropped without a reply, which is what stops someone forging your address to ask questions as you.
- A conversation can be open in one place at a time. If Portrait says the conversation is currently open in the Portrait app, close it there and reply again.
- Charts arrive as images. A chart Easel builds is embedded in the reply, so it is there in the message. If your mail client shows you the plain-text version instead, that one carries a link to open the chart in the Portrait app.
- A very old thread may have expired. If Portrait says so, start a new email to begin a fresh session.
