Business Relationships organizes the business relationships that Portrait has recorded for one company. Use it to investigate possible competitors, suppliers, and customers and to inspect the evidence behind each relationship.
A recorded relationship is a research finding, not proof that the relationship is current, material, reciprocal, or complete. Coverage depends on the companies and sources that Portrait has researched. Verify the cited evidence before using a relationship in an investment conclusion.
Open a relationship category
- In the desktop web app, open Companies and select a company.
- Confirm the company name and ticker in the page header.
- Select Business Relationships.
- Select Competitors, Suppliers, or Customers.
The supplier and customer categories use the selected company as their point of reference:
- Suppliers provide goods or services to the selected company.
- Customers receive goods or services from the selected company.
- Competitors contains companies recorded as competitors or peers of the selected company.
Portrait currently generates competitor and supplier-customer relationships. It does not present ownership, partnership, or transaction relationships in this section.
Read the relationship table
Each row separates the counterparty from the strength and coverage of the available evidence:
| Column | What it means |
|---|---|
| Company | The resolved company name and ticker, or the name extracted from a source when Portrait could not match it to a company record. |
| Evidence | The number of recorded findings and distinct source documents or web pages associated with the relationship. |
| Status | Whether the relationship was stated or inferred, followed by the available cross-company coverage. |
| Latest source | The publication date of the newest dated source associated with the relationship. A dash means that no source date is available. |
Select the company-link action to open a resolved counterparty's company page. An Unmatched counterparty has no linked company page to open. Do not assume that an unmatched name is incorrect; check the source and resolve the entity independently.
The expanded view groups repeated findings and sources, so the number of displayed items can differ from the evidence summary. Treat the counts as coverage indicators, not as independent confirmations or a quality score.
Interpret the status
Read both parts of Status before assessing a relationship:
- Stated means that at least one source directly names the relationship. It does not establish that the statement is current or correct.
- Inferred means that Portrait inferred the relationship from peer, market, or supply-chain context. Treat it as a research lead and inspect the evidence before relying on it.
- Both companies means that research for both company records surfaced the relationship. It is not external verification, confirmation by company management, or proof of reciprocity.
- One company means that research for only one of the two company records surfaced the relationship.
- Coverage unavailable means that Portrait cannot calculate a cross-company coverage signal for that row.
- Unmatched means that the extracted counterparty name was not resolved to a Portrait company record. Cross-company coverage is not available.
An explicit finding can strengthen a relationship that was previously inferred. The status does not replace review of the source language, date, and direction.
Verify findings and sources
- Select a relationship row to expand it.
- Read the summary to identify whether the relationship is Stated or Inferred and whether it was found in research for one or both companies.
- Under Findings, compare the quoted passage or relationship detail with the selected category and counterparty.
- Treat Why linked as Portrait's explanation of the match, not as source text.
- Select a citation marker or an item under Sources to inspect the available document or web evidence.
- If more than five sources are available, select Show all sources to inspect the complete displayed list.
Check that the source names the intended companies, supports the relationship direction, and applies to the period you are researching. A source can describe a historical relationship even when it falls inside the current research window.
Some rows have no retrievable quote or source details. Portrait then shows Relationship reported without a quoted passage or No source details are available for this relationship. Treat that row as an unverified lead and find independent evidence before relying on it.
On the company page, you can select a passage and send it to Ask Easel about {company}. Portrait adds the company, relationship category, counterparty, and selected text as context for the question. This action does not validate or modify the relationship.
Understand research coverage
If Portrait has not researched the selected company directly, the page can still show relationships found while researching other companies that named it. Portrait marks this list as partial and offers Run full research.
If there are no recorded relationships, Portrait shows No relationship coverage yet and can offer Run relationship research. The current desktop action researches the three supported categories with a default three-year source lookback; it does not provide a date-range control. Run full research means direct research across those categories, not unlimited history or exhaustive market coverage.
Relationship research takes a few minutes. You can leave the page while it runs. The page shows Requested or Processing during generation and can continue to display the last available relationships while an update runs. A new run can add evidence to existing records; it does not prove that an older relationship remains current.
After a completed run, the footer shows when the company was last researched and the source window used for that run. The window describes the sources considered, not the period during which every recorded relationship was valid.
Troubleshoot empty and error states
- No competitors, suppliers, or customers surfaced: No supported relationships in that category were found in the available sources. This does not mean that the company has none.
- Relationship research could not be started: Retry the page action. If no relationships are available, you can also select Run research again after the failed run.
- Showing the last available relationships: Portrait could not refresh the data but retained earlier results. Review their source dates before using them, then select Retry.
- Sources and evidence could not be loaded: Select Retry in the expanded row. Do not treat the relationship as sourced until the evidence loads or you verify it elsewhere.
If repeated retries fail, contact Portrait support with the company, category, and visible error text. Do not send credentials or licensed source content.
Name and surface
The current tab is Business Relationships; older material can call it Peers & Supply Chain. Supported iOS versions also expose company relationships from the company page. A recorded edge and its source do not guarantee that the relationship still exists; check dates and available evidence.
