Screening helps you find companies that fit your research criteria. Combine financial metrics with conditions drawn from company documents to turn a broad universe into a focused set of companies to investigate. Create, edit, and run screens on the web and in the Portrait iOS app.
From research criteria to matching companies
Use quantitative filters for metrics such as market capitalisation, fundamentals, ratios, margins, valuation, and revisions. Use qualitative filters to search supported company documents, Primers, and Case Studies for a stated condition.
Describe the companies you want to find to the AI Assistant, review the resulting filters, and run the screen. On the web, you can also configure filters manually. On iOS, build and refine them through the conversation. See Build a screen with the AI Assistant.
Open a company's result to see how it performed against the filters and review the available reasoning and supporting evidence. Export results as CSV or use the matching companies to create a Project for follow-up research. Configure automatic daily or weekly runs in the web app to revisit the same criteria over time.
Use Screening when the criteria can be expressed as filters. Use a research workflow when the task instead requires an open-ended investigation or a structured report.
Review the results
A match means a company passed the filters evaluated in that run. Open the company-level results to check the metrics, periods, and evidence behind each condition. Distinguish a failed condition from missing data, and inspect a sample of both matches and excluded companies when refining a screen.
A screen and its runs
A screen is the saved configuration: filters, name, automatic-run schedule, and notification choice. A run is one execution with its own filter snapshot, status, and company results. Editing the saved screen does not rewrite an earlier run's snapshot.
Separate filters narrow the universe together. Geography and industry checks run before quantitative filters, followed by qualitative filters. A company that fails an earlier step is not evaluated against later steps; absence of a later result is not a second failure. Inspect the filter funnel and company evidence to distinguish a failed condition from missing data.
See Filter expressions, units, and missing data for the evaluation contract, and Run and schedule screens for history, schedules, cancellation, and export.
To collaborate with teammates, see Sharing for read-only access, finding shared screens, and creating an independent copy.
Access and usage
Screening requires a Portrait account and access to the relevant data sources. Running or extending a screen consumes Normal included usage and is subject to budget and concurrency limits. Review Settings → Usage in the web app before a large run. If a request is refused, check the reason, wait for capacity, or reduce the scope before trying again.
