Check the state of the original Deep Research run before submitting another request. A connection problem can hide progress while research continues. The web progress view offers the recovery controls below; on mobile, reopen the report or use the web app if those controls are absent.
States and next actions
| What you see | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The request is refused before research starts | The submitted request did not pass a source, document-volume, usage, or concurrency check | Read the specific error and correct that condition. A refusal does not create a new run |
| Research stages or active progress | Portrait has accepted the run and is processing it | Leave the run to continue, or return later to the same research |
| Progress is temporarily unavailable | The app could not retrieve the latest state; this is not confirmation that research failed | Choose Reload status or reopen the same research before starting again |
| No recent research updates | No recent progress was observed; the execution status is uncertain | Reload the original run's status before reviewing setup or starting replacement work |
| A failure or cancellation is reported | The run ended without successful completion | Review the error and use Review setup when offered. Check companies, sources, attachments, and scope before submitting a new run |
| The completed report is available | A result is ready to inspect | Review the Portrait Review, Appendix, and material source claims, then export it if needed |
Closing the page or losing the connection after acceptance does not cancel the server's research. It stops that page from receiving progress. A displayed cancellation is a different state; do not infer it from a closed tab or an elapsed timer.
Completion email
Where the progress view offers Email me when the report is ready, select it to request a completion email. Changing this preference controls notification delivery, not execution. The research can finish while the page is closed; reopen the original run to verify the result if an email has not arrived.
Correct a refused request
- Too many documents: reduce the company set, document types, or publication period. The 1,500-document count and its exclusions are defined in Select Deep Research companies and sources.
- Unavailable attachments: reopen source selection and replace or remove deleted documents or documents whose sharing has been revoked. Some stale attachments can be omitted while the rest of a request proceeds; check the full intended scope before retrying.
- Usage or concurrency: review Settings → Usage and the error shown. Reduce scope where it affects the limit, wait for other work to finish when appropriate, or ask the account team about access. Repeatedly submitting the same request does not resolve the limit.
If recovery does not resolve the problem
Reopen the same run and check whether a report or a newer state has appeared. If it still fails or its state remains unavailable, contact Portrait support with the report URL, approximate start time, surface, and exact error message. Keep private source content and credentials out of the support request.
